This is the fourth stage of our car trip through Tuscany. The one that takes us from Sorano to Pisa, passing through the Maremma region and through Grosetto. 270 km through places and spectacular places.

The first thing we thought was to lock ourselves in the room and stay there to live. We did not want to check out, or fuck. The views over the town of Sorano from the window they were the ones that fall in love instantly, and jo, we didn't want to leave that little hotel. Then we remember that breakfast included nutella toast and for many panoramic views of the room, I could no longer compete. We are more sweet tooth than squatters, what are we going to do ...

We left behind Sorano, a discovery, but not before enjoying a last view of the city from theSan Rocco viewpoint and Rober who slips and finishes his ass on the floor, once again. To this boy the force of gravity always plays some bad passes.

If you are interested in Etruscan art you can take advantage of the proximity ofSovana and stop to know your Etruscan Necropolis(€ 5). We decided to leave it for another occasion since the kilometers that separated us from our destination were a few. And because we were not excited to spend € 10 to see a tomb, call us Etruscan-insensitive or backpacking rats. Both definitions are true, we will not deny it.

The next stop is those that are cool: hot springs of Saturnia (But we have the time counted so we are left wanting to take a good dip, we will return). According to what they told us, you can camp for free in the area, if you have time and go through the area with your camping equipment, do not hesitate: this is the perfect place to plant your tent. If, however, you are not very camper, do not do like us and reserve a couple of hours for this place (and do not forget the swimsuit!).

On the way back to the car, we set off to one of the destinations that, planning the trip to Tuscany, gave us more hope: Volterra. This small town is located on the top of a hill, about 400 meters high: the views from there are those that cut your breath.

But for that we had to go through much of the region of the Maremma... and we saw a landscape certainly disconcerting ... the so-called "valley of the devil", withLarderello and its huge tubes to the head. It is a geothermal area that has been used to build a gigantic thermal power plant that produces, alone, 10% of the world's geothermal energy!

Volterra was an Etruscan capital and, thanks to its almost 3,000 years of history, it offers visitors more instantaneous and pleasant walks. We recommend you visit:

  • The Piazza and Palazzo dei Priori, which count served as inspiration for the very Old Palace of Florence.
  • The Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta.
  • The Baptistery of San Giovanni Battista.
  • The Roman Theater
  • The Etruscan Acropolis.
  • The views of the city from Piazza dei Santi Martiri della Libertà.
  • Also do not forget to walk through the streets of the center, the best way to capture the essence of the city.

Tip: to visit Volterra calculates about 2 hours of time, it is a good excursion from San Gimignano (40km away) or if you are on the way to Pisa, as in our case.

At this point we were more hungry than Falete in full bikini operation, but we decided to hold on because we had a very appetizing plan: eat in a agriturismo.

The agriturismos are rural restaurants (in many cases they also offer accommodation), where you can eat luxury. The food of the agriturismo is prepared with local, traditional and (should be) organic products. We decided to stop at Agristurismo Santa Vittoria, located in a very beautiful environment, a few km from Volterra. We ate some mixed Tuscan crostini (tomato, cheese and honey, cheese and ham and pate), a grilled meat, which was delicious although nothing from the other world, and a plate ofpappardelle with wild boar meat Sincerely, I was to suck my fingers, lick the plate and suck my fingers again. In total we spend about € 30 (drinking carbonated water) for both of us.

Eye: the photos are deceiving and the dishes seem small, but especially the pappardelle, they were lovely.

Where? S.P 15 km 7,850, 56048 Loc. Molino d'Era, Volterra

With a very full belly (and unbuttoned pants buttons) we go to the last destination: Pisa, of which we already tell you everything to see and do in one day so we will not repeat ourselves, right?

Well, no. With the arrival in Pisa We conclude our 4-day road trip through Tuscany… Soon we will prepare a guide with all the stages, the kilometers and a few tips. Do not miss it!

Useful information

:: Sites through which the route passes

Sorano, Etruscan Necropolis of Sovana, Termas de Saturnia, Montemerano, Larderllo (with an impressive thermal power station!), Volterra and Pisa.

:: Kilometres: 270km approximately.

:: Where to sleep?

We slept one night at the Hotel Relais dei Fiori, in the center of Pisa. It is a cheap accommodation but with well-appointed and decorated rooms. Breakfast is given at the 5 star Relais Orologio hotel!

:: Where to park for free in Pisa?

Pisa, like many Italian cities, you have a limited traffic zone that you will not want to cross if you are not going to pay fines. Free parking is outside the historic center. We, considering our location of the hotel, left the car in the free parking of Via Paparelli, at the northern entrance of the city, which was almost empty. From there walking to the center is about 15 minutes.
