Koh Mook is an island in the Trang region, south of Thailand, which at the moment enjoys the low influx of tourists. Perhaps that is why it does not yet have a fast ferry system developed to reach it, such as other Thai islands such as Koh Phi Phi or Koh Lipe. In addition its proximity to the coast, 6 km, is also another factor.

The port of departure to the island of Koh Mook is the Khuan Tung Ku Pier, It is located about 45 km from Trang. The truth is that it is very small, it has an office where you can wait for your boat to leave and little else. Little hustle, really.

Not having a fast ferry that connects it with land does not mean you can't get there! Here we give you the three options to get to Koh Mook:

  • Hiring a private Longtail boat. They leave from the port without established hours, you just have to arrive, pay and leave. The price is 600THB per boat (€ 16). It takes 15 minutes.
  • Sharing a longtail boat. The schedules depend on the groups that will arrive at the port. We arrived at 11:30 and we had to wait until 12:30 that a group arrived to share it. The price is 150THB per person (€ 4). It takes 20 minutes.
  • Local ferry It is a boat tartana, type of Chanquete. It leaves at 13pm in the direction of Koh Mook from the port of Khuan Tung Ku and at 08:00 in the opposite direction. The price is 100THB per person (€ 2.6). It takes 30 minutes.

In the Wrong Way The prices are these:

  • To Trang with the local ferry, including transport to the port of Koh Mook if you negotiate it well (the motillo that costs 50THB) and transport to Trang from the port, by 250THB per person (€ 7). Departure at 08:00.
  • To Trang with shared / private ferry, by 350THB per person (€ 10) at 09:00 and 400THB per person (€ 11) the rest of the hours.
  • To the airport at any time by 500THB per person (€ 13.5).

A good agency to hire both transportation and excursions is Mr Young, right next to the port of arrival in Koh Mook.

¿You don't know what a longtail boat is? It is the so-called long aft boat so common in Thailand. They are motorized wooden boats, very manageable and normally driven by a single boatman (sometimes he has an assistant). They are usually used for short trips and their use is both for tourism on snorkeling trips or to other islands, or in particular to take goods to the islands or their own transport.

Hiring transportation to the island of Koh Mook is not a problem. You have several ways to do it:

  • From a travel agency (of the thousand that are in each tourist site of Thailand). They will include transportation to the port by minivan or taxi and the boat to Koh Mook. From Ao Nang in Krabi for example this transport package cost about 900THB per person (25€).
  • From the Trang bus and train station. We did not do it but we read in different blogs that there is a minivan transport service that leaves from the vicinity of the Trang train station plus boat for a price of about 350THB per person (€ 10). The schedule in theory is at 11 in the morning.
  • Directly at the port. You will have to arrive by your means to the port of Khuan Tung Ku Pier (there is no public transport, except for this minivan from the vicinity of the Trang train station), either sharing a van, either by taxi or tuc tuc. We negotiated with a taxi from Ao Nang to the port (135km, 2 hours) for 1,400THB per way, for the three people.

Both the local ferry and the boats arrive at the port of Ao Kham in Koh Mook. From there you can take one motorcycle with sidecar to mount both people and suitcases (maximum 3 people) or a van If you are a larger group. The price is the same: 50THB per person (€ 1.3). These bikes are the best option to go from one point to another on the island (from one coast to another) and the price is always the same. You can request in your accommodation to call a motorcycle contact or they will have someone in charge of this.

You also have the option of rent a motorcycle or a bicycle for days. Motorcycle prices are around 300THB per day and bikes 100THB per day.
